Higher spin speeds extract more water from your clothes, reducing drying time and saving you money if you use a dryer. Alternatively, you might want a lower speed for delicates or easily creased fabrics. The higher the spin speed, the more likely your clothes will be very stiff when they come out of the wash, requiring a quick shake or two to straighten them out a little before drying.

An extra rinse can be useful if your wash hasn't removed all the detergent, leaving white marks behind. Some washers have it as an extra run added to the end of a program, or as a simple single run rinse and spin once the primary program is finished. Some also can either do a spray-rinse only water saving , or a deep rinse. An extra rinse can be especially useful if you have sensitive skin and find your detergent is causing a reaction as it helps to minimise any residual product.

Most front loaders have a heater that allows a connection to cold water only while still giving you the option of warm or hot washes. Top loaders generally don't have a heater, so need a connection to both hot and cold water taps. A washing machine with an internal heater gives you more and hotter temperature options, and more flexibility in where to put your washing machine as you don't need a hot tap, but means you can't take advantage of free solar hot water if you have it.

Some washers have a feature that allows you to program your preferred wash option favourite or memory program for future use at the touch of a button.

Many high-end washing machines now offer Wi-Fi connectivity. This allows you to monitor the progress of your wash and receive notification when it's completed, download additional wash programs and manage your washing machine remotely via the manufacturer's app.

We're not sure how useful this is — you still have to load and unload the clothes yourself. Many machines now have self-cleaning lint filter systems, while others use the traditional mesh trap in the wash drum that you have to clean manually. Lint filters in washing machines are designed to prevent particles being redeposited on your clothes, but aren't designed to capture microparticles before they go down the drain. Front loaders typically don't need lint filters because they're gentler on clothes, but they will have a trap filter for those coins that fall into the washer.

Our test results list washers that have lint filters. All washing machines have to carry a label that shows their energy rating. Some manufacturers separate the kWh into warm and cold washes, but they're only required to give you the warm-wash figure. Washers with both hot and cold intakes and no internal heater typically top loaders will include an estimate of the energy your home's hot water service will use to heat your wash water in this figure as well as the energy used by the washing machine itself, so you can more readily compare internal heater and non-internal heater washers.

To calculate the annual running costs of your machine, multiply your electricity rate for example, 30c by the washer's kWh for example, kWh. The stars are a quick take on energy ratings — the more stars, the more energy-efficient the machine. However, you can only compare star ratings between machines of the same capacity.

A bigger machine may well have more stars than a smaller one because there are energy savings inherent in a larger load , but it will probably use more power overall in a year. There are more ways to save energy and water.

The testing process is scientific, detailed and rigorous, and you can use our online tools to compare machines and see which ones:. Not all washing machine brands are created equal. The CHOICE brand reliability survey tells you which brands our members have found most reliable, which have the highest owner satisfaction and how well manufacturers have dealt with problems if something goes wrong.

In addition, fuzzy logic notices the weight of the laundry and subsequently establishes how much time, detergent and water needed to clean the load. Hence, there is no hassle for you concerning the settings of the washing machine. Temperature control is very useful during winter.

Apart from that, hot water will clean your clothes better than cold water. There are also a number of machines with steam setting that also help in fighting stains and dirt. Time delay feature is beneficial if you want to shun noise at particular times. On the other hand, the pre-soak feature lets you soak your clothes for a certain period of time, before the wash cycle begins automatically. Hi, You Have. News Bigg Boss Photos Videos.

Front Load Washers Top Load Washers Uses less water per load Deep water settings available High spin speeds for shorter dry times Shorter wash times generally Save space by stacking Load and unload comfortably without bending over Often provides greater capacity Choose from agitator or impeller wash action.

Size is an important factor when buying a washing machine, so getting to grips with the different levels of capacity will help you make the right choice. An average washing machine is likely to have a capacity of around 6 to 7kg, which should be enough for a typical family of four.

Opt for a smaller model if there are fewer people in your household — but remember that washing machines last a number of years, so you may want to plan ahead if you expect your family to get bigger. When buying washing machines, look out for the Energy Star Rating label, which will give you an idea of how energy efficient your chosen appliance is. Each machine is given a score out of ten, while the actual consumption figure — usually measured in kilowatt hours per year — should give you a good idea of how much power the product uses.

Click here for more tips on choosing the most energy efficient washing machine for your home. Models are graded between zero and six stars for efficiency, with a higher number of stars meaning the unit is more environmentally friendly. The label will also say how many litres of water per wash the product requires, which is called the water consumption flow. Having lots of speeds and settings on your washing machine may offer you greater flexibility, but it could also be confusing.

Faster speeds mean clothes are dryer at the end of the cycle, which can be useful for woollen clothes and other heavier materials. Settings will vary between machines, but useful features include cycles for whites, delicates and woollens, as well as an option for a fast-speed wash.

High-end machines contain sensor technology to set a cycle automatically, removing much of the hassle of selecting the right program. Cleaning your washing machine regularly removes build up detergents and laundry soils which can cause your washing machine to smell. Giving it a quick clean once a month also ensures your clothes are washed properly every time. Some models remind you when cleaning is needed. Other models have cleaning settings that allow you to clean the machine at the touch of a button so you can say goodbye to manually cleaning your washer.

Most retailers will offer a fitting service, but if you decide to tackle the project on your own, here are some things to keep in mind. It is advisable to leave around one inch of space at each side of the unit. Take careful measurements of the space where you intend to put it and make sure you leave enough room for the door to open. You can have your washing machine installed in a few different ways, and the best option really depends on how much space you have and the type of washer you have:.

The washer and dryer sit alongside each other in the laundry, so transferring everything from one to the other is easy. The side by side washer and dryer are slightly elevated by a pedestal, that creates extra storage space underneath the two appliances.

The washer sits underneath the dryer which is stacked on top with a stacking kit only possible for front-loader washing machines. Back to top.

The exceptions to this rule are s uch , m uch , r ich , and wh ich. When words end with a silent e , drop the e before adding - ing. This rule also applies to other suffixes that start with vowels, like - ed , - er , - able , and - ous. In a one-syllable word like win where one short vowel is followed by one consonant, double the consonant before adding a suffix that starts with a vowel. Examples: wi nn er, wi nn ing, wi nn able. But when a singular word ends with s , sh , ch , x , or z , add es to make it plural, as in class es , brush es , and fox es.

Multisensory teaching engages multiple senses for the student to support their learning. Ideally, this would involve the senses of sight, hearing and touch or movement. When I am…. Students can use some guiding questions to help them make a decision when writing a new word: Is this word one syllable?

Is the vowel short or long? If no, add TCH. If yes, add CH. If the vowel sound is long or a vowel team, add CH. Here are some teaching ideas for CH versus TCH: Sorting — You can sort words by spelling or sort pictures by medial sounds to build skills listening for short vowels. Review activities — Spending just a couple of minutes each lesson working with this generalization will help to solidify the learning. Have the student fill in the blank with ch or tch to finish spelling words.

Two-Vowels Together : When two vowels are next to each other, the first vowel is usually long the sound is the same as the sound of the letter and the second vowel is silent. Examples: meat , seat , plain , rain , goat , road , lie , pie. Vowel-Consonant- e Pattern : When a short word, or the last syllable of a longer word, ends in this pattern vowel-consonant-e , then the first vowel is usually long and the e is silent.

Examples: place , cake , mice , vote , mute. Y as a long I : The letter y makes the long sound of i when it comes at the end of a short word that has no other vowel. Examples: cry, try , my , fly , by , hi.

Y as a long E : When y or ey ends a word in an unaccented syllable, the y has the long sound of e. Examples: money , honey , many , key , funny. I before E : Write i before e when the sound is long e except after the letter c. Examples: relieve , relief , reprieve. When there is a c preceding, then it is ei : receipt , receive , ceiling , deceive , conceive.

If your aim is to be an Air Force pilot, however, there are different requirements. Corrective vision might disqualify the candidate, as well, but is no longer an automatic disqualification. The Marines and Navy have similar, though slightly less stringent requirements , and the Army, which mostly has helicopter pilots, also has less stringent requirements.

For the Air Force, once the applicant has entered flight school, requirements also relax. An interesting change happened for Chinese pilots in the past few years. In , China relaxed its pilot requirements. Nearly half of Chinese residents are short sighted , with 70 percent of high school and college students short sighted. The number of short sighted people in China is increasing, decreasing the qualified population for pilots. They changed the standard for uncorrected distance from 0.

With poor eyesight being most significant reason applicants were eliminated during the medical exam, the change had the desired effect: The number of qualified candidates rose from 28 percent to 84 percent of all applicants. Vision is arguably your most important sense, and protecting it is paramount. Even if you have perfect vision today, you never know when that might change.

Here are a few ways to keep your eyes working their best:. All adults need routine eye exams by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Your doctor will check your eyes for conditions such as glaucoma and retinal damage, which can be treated and controlled if found early. Keeping in good physical health supports the wellness of your eyes.

If you fail either portion of the OCVT during the day, you have a chance to re-take the test at night. Since they administer some of the above mention tests they will be able to help explain everything to you. This test is managed at your local FSDO flight standards district office. Just like the third class medical, if you fail the the day portion of the OCVT for your first or second class medical, you will be able to retake this at night.

If you fail the night OCVT which you would take only if you failed the daytime OCVT as well , you will be back to where you started and be prohibited from flying at night or by color signal control.

For the third class medical, passing the OCVT is enough to get your medical, but there is another test if you want your first or second class medical, and that is passing a color vision medical flight test MFT. The test occurs during an actual flight and you will be required to demonstrate the following:. Well, it depends on what class medical certificate you get.

All medical exams have different durations, and they are further split by how old you are when you take the exam 40 years old is the line in the sand. Density can have effects on interactions within a population such as competition for food and the ability of individuals to find a mate. Smaller organisms tend to be more densely distributed than larger organisms Figure 1. Figure 1. Australian mammals show a typical inverse relationship between population density and body size. As this graph shows, population density typically decreases with increasing body size. Why do you think this is the case? The most accurate way to determine population size is to count all of the individuals within the area.

However, this method is usually not logistically or economically feasible, especially when studying large areas. Thus, scientists usually study populations by sampling a representative portion of each habitat and use this sample to make inferences about the population as a whole. The methods used to sample populations to determine their size and density are typically tailored to the characteristics of the organism being studied.

For immobile organisms such as plants, or for very small and slow-moving organisms, a quadrat may be used. A quadrat is a square structure that is randomly located on the ground and used to count the number of individuals that lie within its boundaries.

To obtain an accurate count using this method, the square must be placed at random locations within the habitat enough times to produce an accurate estimate. For smaller mobile organisms, such as mammals, a technique called mark and recapture is often used. This method involves marking captured animals in and releasing them back into the environment to mix with the rest of the population.

Later, a new sample is captured and scientists determine how many of the marked animals are in the new sample. This method assumes that the larger the population, the lower the percentage of marked organisms that will be recaptured since they will have mixed with more unmarked individuals. For example, if 80 field mice are captured, marked, and released into the forest, then a second trapping field mice are captured and 20 of them are marked, the population size N can be determined using the following equation:.

These results give us an estimate of total individuals in the original population. The true number usually will be a bit different from this because of chance errors and possible bias caused by the sampling methods. In addition to measuring size and density, further information about a population can be obtained by looking at the distribution of the individuals throughout their range. A species distribution pattern is the distribution of individuals within a habitat at a particular point in time—broad categories of patterns are used to describe them.

Individuals within a population can be distributed at random, in groups, or equally spaced apart more or less. These are known as random, clumped, and uniform distribution patterns , respectively Figure 2. Different distributions reflect important aspects of the biology of the species.

They also affect the mathematical methods required to estimate population sizes. An example of random distribution occurs with dandelion and other plants that have wind-dispersed seeds that germinate wherever they happen to fall in favorable environments.

A clumped distribution, may be seen in plants that drop their seeds straight to the ground, such as oak trees; it can also be seen in animals that live in social groups schools of fish or herds of elephants.

As time progresses, some individuals die, so there are fewer and fewer individuals present each year. But when do most individuals die? Do most individuals live to old age or do many individuals die at young ages?

Ecologists use survivorship curves to visualize how the number of individuals in a population drops off with time. In order to measure a population, ecologists identify a cohort, which is a group of individuals of the same species, in the same population, born at the same time. Data is then collected on when each individual in a population dies.

Survivorship curves can be used to compare generations, populations, or even different species. Survivorship curves actually describe the survivorship in a cohort: If cohorts are similar through time, they can be considered to describe the survivorship of a population.

Because survivorship can be drastically different in different environments, this metric is not usually considered to be a property of a species. Besides the constraint of the general life history strategy of a species, the shape of survivorship curves can be affected by both biotic and abiotic factors, such as competition and temperature. Figure 2 By plotting the number of survivors per 1, individuals on a log scale versus time, three basic patterns emerge Pearl , Deevey ; Figure 1.

Individuals with Type I survivorship exhibit high survivorship throughout their life cycle. Populations with Type II survivorship have a constant proportion of individuals dying over time. Populations with Type III survivorship have very high mortality at young ages. Most real populations are some mix of these three types. For example, survivorship of juveniles for some species is Type III, but is followed by type II survivorship for the long-lived adults.

Note that survivorship curves must be plotted on a log scale to compare with idealized Type I, II, and III curves; they will look different on a linear scale.

The use of a log scale better allows a focus on per capita effects rather than the actual number of individuals dying. For example, the type II curve has a constant proportion of individuals dying each time period. Nonetheless, the same proportion of individuals died both times.

On a log scale, the relationship of survivorship with time is linear; this scale highlights that the same proportion dies in the second time period as in the first Figure 2. A lot of effort is invested in each individual, resulting in high survivorship throughout the life cycle: Most individuals die of old age.

In general, this is more typical of K-selected species, which tend to grow in stable environments where intense competition between individuals is experienced. The heavy parental investment improves competitive ability and makes it more likely that individuals will survive to reproduction. Figure 3 shows actual data from a population of Dall sheep Ovis dalii , which exhibit Type I survivorship.

For populations with Type II survivorship, the mortality of an individual does not depend on its age. Commonly listed examples of this include rodents, adult birds, and certain turtle species. Figure 4 shows actual data from a population of the slider turtle Pseudemys scripta , which exhibits Type II survivorship from ages one to fifteen years.

Most individuals in populations with Type III survivorship produce many thousands of individuals, most of whom die right away: Once this initial period is over, survivorship is relatively constant. Examples of this include fishes, seeds, and marine larvae. Relatively little effort or parental care is invested in each individual. In general, this is more typical of r-selected species.

R-selected species experience a frequent disturbance or uncertainty in their environments. Producing a large number of offspring makes it more likely that at least a few will land in favorable areas. Figure 5 shows actual data of a population of the invasive cheatgrass, Bromus tectorum , which has Type III survivorship under certain conditions.

In the same study, other populations of B. Figure 6 Demography is the study of characteristics of human populations such as births, deaths, and growth rates: Survivorship patterns are also an important part of this. Humans in developed countries have more of a Type I survivorship.

For example, Figure 6 shows the different curves of cohorts of males born in central Pennsylvania. These data were gathered from cemeteries by the Centre County Genealogical Society.

There is a general trend for survivorship to be higher in cohorts born later, perhaps due to advances in medicine. In addition, the cohort born in — experienced more mortality in the American Civil War. Survivorship curves in humans may also be strongly different in different regions or areas of the world.

After Pearl, ; Deevey, These types of survivorship curve are useful generalizations, but in practice, patterns of survival are usually more complex. Thus, in a population of Erophila verna, a very short-lived annual plant inhabiting sand dunes, survival can follow a type I curve when the plants grow at low densities; a type II curve, at least until the end of the lifespan, at medium densities; and a type III curve in the early stages of life at the highest densities Figure 4.

A woman who takes the time to polish her nails wants to make a good first impression and be seen positively by others. Plain and well taken care of nails suggest you have a good grasp of your own needs and wants and are most likely well-organized and neat.

Surprisingly, the back of your hand can tell a story to a man all on its own. The "state" of your hand can let someone know a lot about you and yes, can indicate how old you are, as well. Is there hair on the back of your hands?

Is it thin or thick? Are there age spots? Is the skin well tended and soft, or dry, or perhaps cracked? People who have smooth, elastic skin here are often young and vibrant, while people with various marks or spots may show their age faster. And how well you take care of your hands can show your attention to detail. Scratches and cuts suggest that you work with your hands or perhaps that you have pets you play with.

Your hands hold many secrets when it comes to who you are and the things that are important to you. This quick hand and palm reading guide highlights just a few of the things that a man might pay attention to when he sees you for the first time. They reveal things that are important to you and aspects of who you are that you might not even realize.

The Tarahumara Frog is not doing well in the state. They are considered extinct in Arizona but there has been attempts to re-introduce them to the wild. The Canyon Tree Frog has rough skin and no stripes through its eyes. They are found along boulders and rocks above streams.

The Lowland Burrowing Tree Frog is different than most other tree frogs in that it spends its time underground instead of in the trees. They are known for their large, flat head. The Barking Frog is the one species of its family in the state. It has tubercles on its feet and a skin fold on the back of the head. The True Toads are the typical toads that you know.

They have warts along their back and parotoid glands behind their eyes. The Green Toad lacks a cranial crest and has no stripe down middle of the back. They also have elongated parotoid gland.

The African Clawed Frog might be spreading diseases to native frog species. In the state of Arizona, it is illegal to be in possession of one without a permit. Rio Grande Leopard Frog was probably introduced to the state in the 70s or 60s. The frogs could cause problems with native species by competing for food. View all posts by Adam. Skip to content September 26, October 1, Adam. I tried, off and on, for the last 15 years, but I never seemed to be there at exactly the right time and place.

I reached the first set of ponds on the northern edge of my search area. I stopped the truck, turned off the engine and listened. Dead silence! I got out and searched the pond edges for movement. I got in the truck and went down the road to look for more possible breeding ponds.

Ancient mesquite trees grew in the high burm surrounding the cattle tank at the next location. The tank, only a puddle a few days earlier, was more than feet across from the rainwater flowing into it. In order to access the tank, I walked several yards from the cattle enclosure and through a thicket of skin-cutting mesquite. While I crawled under a large tree I spotted my first quarry: a Sonoran Desert toad.

The Sonoran Desert toad Bufo alvarius weighs in at little more than 2 pounds and is 8 inches long. It is the largest toad native to the United States. I most often find these huge toads lumbering around looking for mates or food. I can imagine that to other frogs and toads in and around the ponds Bufo alvarius aka the Colorado River toad must look like a T-rex.

These toads are voracious eaters and consume almost anything they can get into their mouths, including other toads, tarantulas, snakes, scorpions, mice and insects.

With six other morsel-sized amphibians in the vicinity, monsoon season must seem like a virtual smorgasbord to a Sonoran Desert toad. Although I have known Sonoran Desert toads to breed in permanent ponds before the monsoon rains start, they are most active after the first rains in July. They call from the banks of small ponds and grab females as they happen by. When these toads are in full-breeding swing I have seen 10 or more pairs in amplexus and several females carrying bulky males on their backs while looking for water.

Compared to other serenading amphibians, Sonoran Desert toads have quiet voices for their size, probably limited by their small vocal sacs. Their paratoid glands ooze large amounts of white poison when they are disturbed too much. A friend of mine believes that one of his Labrador retrievers died as a result of swallowing one of these toxic critters. Rumor has it that Sonoran Desert toad poison has been used as a strong hallucinogen, so wash your hands after handling one.

At the same pond, I found another early arrival, the Great Plains toad B. This toad is big, brown and not very attractive. Great Plains toads are the second largest amphibian at the ponds the largest females are 4 inches. They are insectivores and not dangerous to other pond anurans. Great Plains toads Bufo cognatus have the largest geographical distribution of all the desert toads. The unmistakable, high-pitched eeeeeeeee of the these toads can be heard for considerable distances, and a single call may last up to one minute or more.

Great Plains toads have the largest geographical distribution of all the desert toads. Quite remarkably, they have evolved to live in Alberta, Canada, where the winter temperatures can drop to minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and in the water-poor, creosote-bush-dominated desert of Arizona, where temperatures seldom drop below freezing.

In the desert ponds, the Great Plains and Sonoran Desert toads are the first in and last out. Both can be found breeding before the first rainfall in June and well into September. Somewhere in the darkness, I heard the faint call of the western narrowmouth toad Gastrophryne olivacea.

I decided to go look for it, and on the way I almost stepped on a Mojave rattlesnake Crotalus scutulatus. These rattlesnakes are very venomous and well camouflaged. I promised myself not to come out here alone again! Western narrowmouth toads normally appear the first or second night after the first hard rain.

Because of their small size and secretive nature, I always have difficulty finding them. Unlike most toads, the skin of western narrowmouths appears to be moist with no obvious warts. Both narrowmouths and spadefoots cause me to react strongly when I handle them.

I sneeze and my eyes water. Upon exiting the pond, I removed my tennis shoes, draining them of water and mud. I was frustrated at only having seen three of the seven amphibian species. I ate a granola bar, took a drink of water and started for where I thought I left my truck. On my way, I saw several Sonoran Desert toads near a large wash, so I decided to walk along it for a while. Indeed, several of these amphibians are only found in some of the most arid parts of the deserts that make up much of Arizona.

Many of our amphibians have suffered serious population declines and some, such as the Chiricahua leopard frog and Sonoran tiger salamander, are protected under the Endangered Species Act. In addition to the 25 species of native amphibians, Arizona has become home to four types of exotic amphibians: bullfrogs, Rio Grande leopard frogs, African clawed frogs and barred tiger salamanders. Bullfrogs have become so numerous and widespread that they are now seriously threatening native aquatic wildlife populations, particularly amphibians and reptiles.

But, some of the most astonishing adaptations to desert life are exhibited by a number of frogs and toads that live much of their lives buried underground, only to emerge briefly to breed and grow during the summer rains.

Meanwhile, some ectomorphs who tend to be lean and slender with a small to medium frame and relatively long limbs may identify themselves as endomorphs, especially if they have a soft midsection. The most common reasons for these cases of mistaken identity? In most instances, body types lie on a spectrum, which means that you could have a dominant body type with a few characteristics of another one or a body type that has qualities that are evenly divided between two different ones, Catudal says.

We sometimes group people into general categories, but the good news is that being a combination body type means you have the strengths of two different body types to work with — for instance, you may naturally have both the endurance of an ectomorph and the muscle strength of a mesomorph, which can lead to big training gains. But paying attention to diet alone is unlikely to get you the body you want. What ectomorphs really need to get toned muscles and to prevent overuse injuries and common chronic problems like back pain and osteoporosis , he says, is to add muscle mass and strength through strength-training exercises.

Or replace some of your aerobic workouts with high-intensity interval training HIIT — alternating short bouts of vigorous exercise with brief periods at a slower pace.

One popular way to get in shape is by working specific muscle groups on specific days. So for example, on Mondays you work your arms and lift weights, and then on Tuesdays maybe you focus on ab workouts. This is great and all, but if you ask me, it's not very efficient. What happens if something comes up and you can't make your workout, then you totally miss working whatever body part you set aside for that day. A better approach could be doing workout moves that use your entire body to make sure you're never missing a muscle group every time you workout.

Examples of full-body moves are push-ups and planks. I like to shake up the plank a little bit and add moves like a passe, where you bring the opposite foot to the knee which provides you with a little less stability in the move, which further initiates core engagement, specifically the obliques," Rogers said. Even though HIIT training is one of the most efficient ways to burn calories and get stronger, it's not the only way.

HIIT is not very safe to do every day since it's so intense and you can injure yourself by pushing your body too hard. On other days of the week you could try alternating with low impact workouts.

For example, a pilates or barre class would be a great addition to your routine since the movement is not high impact, but you will still get your heart rate up and get stronger. When you're putting together your workout plans for the week, aim for moving at least 5 days. Fitness experts advise against stretching before you exercise when your muscles are cold. Rather, stretch only once your muscles are warmed up or after your workout, as part of your cool-down routine. As well as the meditative and relaxation benefits , low-impact practices such as yoga, Pilates, and tai chi are great for improving flexibility and balance.

While there are differences between the forms, each offers plenty of options for the beginner and seasoned practitioner alike. An ancient exercise practice that involves performing different postures and poses on an exercise mat, there are many different types of yoga that can help with flexibility and balance as well as strength and stamina.

In addition to the popular types, there are yoga classes modified for different needs, such as prenatal yoga, yoga for seniors, and adaptive yoga modified for disabilities. Most yoga sessions begin with a series of poses to warm up the body, and most sessions end with some type of relaxation exercise.

Not for: Anyone with high blood pressure, heart conditions, or those who may react adversely to hot conditions. Like yoga, Pilates can be performed on a mat as a series of low-impact movement patterns, although it most commonly involves the use of resistance machines. A typical Pilates routine includes exercises that promote posture, balance, flexibility, and core strength. Most routines can be tailored according to your strength and fitness levels.

Tai chi. Focusing on a series of slow, precise body movements that flow from one pose to the next, tai chi is a very effective exercise for balance, especially in older adults looking for a safe and gentle exercise. By moving weight from one leg to another, and alternately raising the arms, legs and hands, tai chi varies the weight on different joints, increasing flexibility and range of motion and improving balance and coordination.

And by focusing your mind on your movements and breathing, you keep your attention on the present, which clears the mind and leads to a relaxed state. While you can learn these exercises online, from an instructional book, video, or app, the best and safest way is to learn from a competent instructor. Committing to a regular, balanced exercise schedule is one of the best things you can do to improve your physical and mental health.

Nothing can derail your fitness goals quicker than a medical problem or avoidable injury. Get medical clearance from your doctor before starting an exercise program, especially if you have a preexisting condition. Warm up. Cool down. A light jog or walk after a run, for example, or some gentle stretches after strength training. Drink plenty of water.

Listen to your body. If you feel pain or discomfort while working out, stop! Sitting for extended periods of time has been linked with numerous health concerns, including elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar, more body fat, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. No amount of willpower is going to keep you going long-term with a workout you hate.

No matter your age, you can find activities that meet your fitness level and needs! Endurance activities , often referred to as aerobic, increase your breathing and heart rates.

These activities help keep you healthy, improve your fitness, and help you perform the tasks you need to do every day. Endurance exercises improve the health of your heart , lungs, and circulatory system. They also can delay or prevent many diseases that are common in older adults such as diabetes , colon and breast cancers, heart disease , and others. Physical activities that build endurance include:. Build up to at least minutes of activity a week that makes you breathe hard.

Try to be active throughout your day to reach this goal and avoid sitting for long periods of time. Your muscular strength can make a big difference. Strong muscles help you stay independent and make everyday activities feel easier, like getting up from a chair, climbing stairs, and carrying groceries.

Keeping your muscles strong can help with your balance and prevent falls and fall-related injuries. You are less likely to fall when your leg and hip muscles are strong. Some people choose to use weights to help improve their strength. If you do, start by using light weights at first, then gradually add more.

For example, at one extreme end of the spectrum, a person who has easy access to high-quality food, makes habitually healthy diet choices, is free of chronic disease, and consistently trains at progressively higher intensities will always have a more functional, muscular, and leaner body composition. But remember, a body type is not a life sentence. If it were, personal trainers , health coaches , and nutrition coaches would all be out of jobs.

The fitness industry, at its core, is all about helping people learn to use tools they can control i. Body type will shift based on lifestyle, activity, and diet modifications.

Someone on the DASH diet will have a different composition than someone who doesn't have a diet preference. This notion is made clear when looking at average physiques of elite athletes in different sports, where consistent training and diet standards lead to similar average body compositions grouped across the somatotype spectrum. Just to reiterate, a body type is not a life sentence. Just like a body mass index range isn't a clearcut indication that someone is obese or underweight.

There are many metrics at work. Research continues to prove that physical training and consistent, habitual changes to the diet have a strong influence on improving body composition.

Metabolic conditions such as hyper- or hypothyroidism are fully within the realm of modern medicine to manage and improve, and chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes are manageable and can even be remedied in many cases through improvements to diet and exercise routines. The human body is highly adaptable and always seeks homeostasis i. But it can take a while to break old patterns that the body has gotten used to. But this is also where Certified Personal Trainers and Nutrition Coaches have the most opportunity to build long-lasting relationships with clients.

Muscle is healthily gained at around one pound per month, and fat healthily lost at around one pound per week. Metabolisms and appetites adjust to new energy intakes, physical activity becomes a natural part of the day instead of a chore, and someone who was predominately ectomorphic or endomorphic will eventually see themselves displaying far more mesomorphic traits over time.

A simple observation of body composition can help quickly identify various physiological situations a client might be dealing with and allow you to tailor solutions that will preferentially address each one.

Use the following somatotype traits to determine which one a person primarily aligns to:. Once you identify which somatotype a client most aligns to, consider the structural and metabolic challenges that are associated with it. Then, tailor the exercise programming and dietary coaching to overcome those hurdles.

This will preferentially develop the necessary foundation that each client individually requires. Obviously, there will be exceptions to this rule — there will always be endomorphs who want to get even bigger to compete in strongman events and ectomorphs who want to keep thin and trim for running ultramarathons — but it rings true for the majority of clients seeking the help of a Certified Personal Trainer or Nutrition Coach.

In light of that average goal, for example, a client who presents predominately as an ectomorph will most likely need dietary and training solutions that focus on muscle protein synthesis and overall mass gain, while typical endomorphic clients will benefit far more from frequent metabolic training and reduced calorie intakes.

So, take a look at each individual, critically evaluate whether you are using the right methods for the body type they currently display, and use the following tips to better tailor your programs for maximal success. Training endomorphs should predominantly focus on fat loss techniques until a desirable body composition and functional cardiorespiratory efficiency have been achieved. Since then, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, and even doctors have used it to help design effective, individualized fitness plans.

The gist is that everyone falls, though not altogether neatly, into the three categories below. Keep in mind that these are generalizations, and that most of us have characteristics of two or even all three somatotypes.

Ectomorphs are long and lean, with little body fat, and little muscle. I mean, based on these body types, there does indeed seem to be a substantial genetic component to your ability to lose fat and build muscle.

However, this is by no means something that can — or should — limit the goals that you have for yourself. Regardless of your body type, if you follow the right workout and diet protocol you will be able to build muscle and lose fat. People come in all different shapes and sizes, and will often have characteristics from 2 different body types.

And that probably goes without saying, right? I mean, some of us are taller, some of us are shorter. If your responses were divided fairly equally — as in 5 and 5 or even 6 and 4 — between two different letters, you likely have a hybrid body type. Generally thin and lean, ectomorphs tend to have slender waists, narrow hips and shoulders, small joints, and long legs and arms. They tend to be slim, without much body fat or noticeable muscle mass.

Naturally muscular, mesomorphs typically have moderate-size frames, with wider shoulders and a narrow waist, strong arms and legs, and modest amounts of body fat. They are genetically predisposed to build muscle, so mesomorphs often require a slightly higher calorie intake since muscle requires more calories to maintain it and more protein than the other types do again, for muscle maintenance.

Generally, mesomorphs are able to lose or gain weight easily. Because they have a medium-to-large bone structure and more body fat than the other types, women who are endomorphs are often described as curvaceous or full-figured, while endomorphic men might be considered stocky, doughy, or round.

Endomorphs usually have narrow shoulders and wider hips, and carry any excess weight in the lower abdomen, hips, and thighs. These hybrids are increasingly common, especially in the athletic world, where this physique is prized for being aesthetically appealing.

Daylight savings time DST is used in the summer months in some regions. DST is 1 hour ahead of standard time. There is no consistency between regions as to when DST takes affect, or reverts back to standard real time. DST was never practical and will eventually be phased out obsolete.

Standard Date Format Virtually the entire world formats time as Hours:Minutes:Seconds hours listed before minutes, minutes listed before seconds. The date format Year-Month-Day has become widely accepted as a standard in many countries. Year The United States and many other countries use the Christian Gregorian calendar to mark years. This calendar has become a standard in such worldwide industries as aviation, and international commerce and trade -- however, other calendars do exist.

PST The Zulu term stems from military usage while Coordinated Universal Time is the civilian term for this hour clock. The origin of these time zones began in the mid 's in England. In the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England began transmitting time telegraphically and just three years later became the standard time in most of Great Britain.

Also, charts and maps were made with reference to the observatory as the "zero" or prime meridian. Over the next few decades a number of locations around the world had developed their own meridians as reference points. The Greenwich meridian was the most popular of these in part due to the reputation for reliability and correctness of the Greenwich Observatory's publications of navigational data.

In , a conference in Washington, D. This was for both for longitude and timekeeping. However, today the individual zone boundaries are no longer straight, nor are they always continuous, as they have been modified for convenience and to satisfy the desires of sovereign nations.
