The overall aesthetic balance of the fish will be altered. If you want them to grow big, that time needs to be spent packing them full of food and giving them lots of fresh water to remove the growth inhibiting hormones that would cause them to be stunted. Keep in mind if you choose to use this form of husbandry with your fish, the effects may be long-lasting.
The oldest goldfish in the world were ALL stunted. By manipulating these factors, we can often control the final size and proportions of the fish. This is part of the art of grooming goldfish.

These wild goldfish relatives can achieve their immense size for a number of reasons. Primarily, the water in which the fish live is typically cleaner than that of the closed environment of a home aquarium.
Also, the water is very well-oxygenated and is topped up regularly with rainwater. Once the fish have reached their adult size, there are few natural predators to bother them.
Finally, the space available to the fish is much greater than they would ordinarily enjoy in a home fish tank. There is some truth in the urban myth that the size to which pet goldfish grow is directly related to the size of their tank.
The best way to help your pet achieve his maximum growth potential is simply by giving him the proper care and diet. A high-protein diet is important to stimulate growth, especially in juvenile goldfish. Good sources of protein include frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. You can also buy gel foods that contain added vitamins, as well as sources of protein.
Goldfish are omnivorous, so you should include some veggies in their diet. Blanched zucchini and shelled fresh peas are usually well-received and are also useful for preventing constipation, which is a condition that frequently afflicts goldfish that are fed a diet containing mostly dry foods.
Ideally, you should feed your goldfish twice or three times each day, offering them just enough food that the fish will eat in a minute or two. The poor goldfish all too often lives his life in a small bowl or tiny tank, neither of which is suitable for this species. I have my tank set up and ready to go for mine but the weekend we were going to get them my husband ended up hospitalized.
So now I am just waiting for him to feel well enough to go get them. I really like the river rock look. I think I will add that on top of the gravel I already have. Your fish are ultra cute!! I will let you know when I get mine. Walmart has a complete 55g set-up, not super expensive, although you may want to consider upgrading filtration. When setting up large tanks, try to set the tank perpendicular to floor joists. This spread out the weight of the tank. Thanks Spoiled Betta!
I really like the river rocks as I read that gravel is bad for them and I don't really like sand and the river rocks look nice and natural and while still giving the bottom of the tank some nice cover.
By the way, how is your husband doing now? Thanks Amneris. I will have to look at which way the joists in my house run and see where I could put the Ok, so I went to the store as I wanted to upgrade the Aqua Tech on my 29 gal. Should that be enough filtration for now? He is going to be able to go back to work for four hours on Monday. It will be good for him to get out of the house. That's great news SB!
Excited for you and glad to hear your husband is doing much better now! So I have yet another question. There is so much conflicting info out there it's ridiculous.
I am trying to figure out the right amount of food to feed Ziggy and Pebbles and how many times a day. One place suggested just what they can eat in 1 min and others say 2 to 3 mins. Also I was told their stomachs are the same size as their eye like other fish, but I know their digestive systems are different to that of other fish and they need to be fed more often. Anyways to my question. I have sinking pellets that I split in 2 and soak in tank water before feeding them. I've been trying to give each fish 2 pellets twice a day.
I also want to start feeding them veggies, but I'm concerned about over feeding them. What is the best amount and frequency to feed them. They are only abou an inch and a half long right now. I also want to get an Amazon Sword for their tank. I want to plant it in the clay pot that currently has a fake plant in it, with gravel. Would that work and should I use root tabs for fertilizer?
I don't want to add any more chemicals than I absolutely have to. Growth is still slowing down, with no substantial differences in size. Your goldfish should be around 1 inch long now.
They are still juveniles, with another growth spurt on the way. Providing adequate protein is imperative. Animal sources, such as shrimp , are excellent additions to their diet. Your goldfish will reach about 2 inches in 6 months. One concern you may hear about is the risk of stunted growth.
No matter what you do, its DNA determines its length. While the fish may look stunted, it might just be what Nature intended. Other factors also play a role, which you can control. A lot of it is common sense. Goldfish bowls, often less than 1 gallon, are not a healthy living environment for your fish.
Some jurisdictions and countries have gone so far as to call them cruel. Goldfish are messy animals. Their bodies support rapid metabolism and, thus, waste.
Every time you change the water, it stresses the fish and leaves them vulnerable to disease. We recommend at least a gallon tank for several reasons.
First, the large amount of water will help ensure that the conditions stay stable, which is ideal for any fish. A fish that can potentially get 12 inches long has to have space to swim. The essential thing for goldfish is a consistent temperature in the tank. Remember that in the wild, things would stay status quo in large bodies of water. Your job is to replicate those conditions with your aquarium. The size heater depends on the tank capacity and the ambient temperature of the room in which you keep it.
