Many Palestinians cheered the wave of Hamas suicide attacks in the first years of the second intifada. They saw "martyrdom" operations as avenging their own losses and Israel's settlement-building in the West Bank, territory wanted by Palestinians for a future state of their own.
When Hamas scored a landslide victory in Palestinian parliamentary elections in , the stage was set for a bitter power-struggle with Fatah. Hamas resisted all efforts to get it to sign up to previous Palestinian agreements with Israel, as well as to recognise Israel's legitimacy and to renounce violence.
Hamas's charter defines historic Palestine - including present-day Israel - as Islamic land and it rules out any permanent peace with the Jewish state. The document also repeatedly makes attacks on Jews as a people, drawing charges that the movement is anti-Semitic.
In , Hamas produced a new policy document that softened some of its stated positions and used more measured language. There was no recognition of Israel, but it did formally accept the creation of an interim Palestinian state in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem - what are known as pre lines.
The document also stresses that Hamas's struggle is not with Jews but with "occupying Zionist aggressors". Israel said the group was "attempting to fool the world". As a result, the new Hamas-led government was subjected to tough economic and diplomatic sanctions by Israel and its allies in the West. After Hamas ousted forces loyal to Fatah from Gaza in , Israel tightened its blockade on the territory, and Palestinian rocket-fire and Israeli air strikes continued.
Four people were killed and six wounded by mortar fire on Eshkol during Operation Protective Edge. Because the attack was conducted by mortars and not rockets, there was no Code Red alert. Tsafrir Baror, 32 - Holon; Capt. Tsvi Kaplan, 28 , - Kedumim; Sgt. Atmoz Greenberg, Sgt. During Operation Protective Edge, 13 Israeli soldiers were killed when an armored troop carrier in Sejaiya took a direct hit from a shoulder-launched anti-tank missile.
Six Israeli soldiers were killed in the fighting that followed. This victim was a civilian who had volunteered to distribute food parcels to Israeli soldiers near the Erez crossing with Gaza when he was critically wounded by mortar fire and later died of his injuries. Frankel, Shaar, and Yifrach were hitchhiking home from attending yeshiva in Gush Etzion when they disappeared.
After a three week search their bodies were found near Halhul, a short drive away from where they wer abducted. This attack is the spark that began Operation Protective Edge. Dadon's body was found in a parking lot in Migdal Haemek with serious trauma including stab wounds. It took some time to solve the crime, but police determined she was killed for nationalistic reasons. Mizrahi was an off duty senior police officer who was on his way to a holiday Seder when he was shot to death by Palestinian terrorists.
Abu Latyef was killed by a Palestinian sniper while working on repairs to the Gaza border fence as a civilian contractor for the Israel Defense Ministry.
The inicdent occured very close to the northern section of the Gaza-Israel border and resulted in only the injuries to Abu Latyef, who was immediately transported to Saroka Hospital where he was declared dead.
Cohen, a Petty Officer 1st Class in the Israeli Navy, was shot and killed by a Lebanese sniper while driving near the Israel-Lebanon border fence in an unarmored military vehicle. Cohen was on operational duty at the time of his death. Investigation found that he was shot six to ten times from a distance of approximately yards. Private Eden Atias was killed after being stabbed in the neck while on a bus in the northern Israeli city of Afula.
He was rushed to a hospital in the city but later died of his wounds. Security guards stopped the assailant - Hussein Jawadra, a year-old Palestinian from Jenin who is residing in Israel illegally. He is said to have acted alone though the motivation for the terror attack may have been connected to Jawadra's two cousins who are held in Israeli jails for murder.
Ofer, a retired IDF colonel, was murdered in a suspected terror attack outside his home in the northern Jordan Valley. Ofer's wife, Monique, told security forces her husband was bludgeoned to death by two Palestinians wielding iron bars and axes.
According to Monique, at around 1 am they heard suspicious noises outside their home and her husband was attacked by the Palestinians as he stepped outside to investigate. Kobi, a combat soldier in the Givati Brigade, was shot and killed by a Palestinian sniper while on guard duty positioned outside the holy Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron.
Kobi was evacuated to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, where doctors tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead soon after arrival. Amar took Hazan to an open field, murdered him and threw the body into a well. Amar was supposedlt hoping to use corpse to extort the release of his terrorist brother from Israeli jail. Borovsky, a father of five, was stabbed to death in the early morning by a Palestinian terrorist as he waited for a ride at the bus station near the city of Ariel in the West Bank.
The Palestinians, 24 years old from Tulkarm, then stole Borovsky's pistol and began firing at a border police checkpoint in the area before he was incapacitated by the soldiers manning the post.
Borovsky is survived by his wife and five children. Yarmulnik, an IDF reservist called to Gaza during Operation Pillar of Defense, succumbed to head injuries suffered during a rocket attack.
Five other soldiers were also wounded in the attack and are listed in good to moderate condition. Fartuk, a corporal in the IDF, was killed when a rocket launched by terrorists in the Gaza Strip exploded in his vicinity in the Eshkol regional council. Two men and one woman were killed when a rocket fired by Hamas terrorists in Gaza directly struck the apartment in which they lived.
According to Israeli sources, the three were not in the bomb shelter of the building. Mirah Scharf, the woman killed, was a mother of three and pregnant of the time. Three children - including a four year boy and two babies - were also wounded as a result of the rocket strike.
The 20 year old soldier in the Artillery Corps was killed when during a firefight with terrorists along Israel's southern border with Egypt. Reports from the scene indicate that the terrorists fired on Yahalomi and other soldiers after they had descended from guard towers to bring water and food to a group of African refugees camped next to Israel's security barrier.
The father of three was killed when terrorists infiltrated Israel from Sinai and led a coordinated attack against those constructing the fence on the Israel-Egypt border. The attacking terrorists used automatic rifles in addition to anti-tank missiles. Killed when a terrorist infiltrating Israel from the southern Gaza Strip opened fire at his IDF unit which has been sent to identify and stop any terror attacks. Soldiers responded to the incident and killed the attacking terrorist.
Wounded in the abdomen by the shrapnel, Ami's condition quickly deteriorated and he later died on the operating table at Barzilai Medical Center. The father and his one year old son were killed when their car careened off of Route 60 in the West Bank near Hebron after being struck by stones thrown by Palestinians. Naim sustained serious head injury while running for cover during a rocket attack on Ashkelone, he died at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem on Sept 4, Killed when a GRAD rocket shot by terrorists in the Gaza strip landed near him in Be'er Sheva as he was driving to find his wife who was hiding from the attacks.
Shoshan is survived by his wife who was nine months pregnant at the time of his death. Eight Israeli citizens were killed and more than 40 wounded in a multi-pronged terrorist attack north of Eilat in southern Israel. Five civilians were killed when terrorists opened fire on a passenger bus and another civilian was killed in a separate attack on an empty bus.
An IDF combat soldier was killed when his jeep hit an IED placed on the road and a member of the Israeli police special SWAT unit was killed when his unit led heavy fighting against a group of retreating terrorists. Viflic suffered mortal wounds when an anti-tank missile was fired by Hamas terrorists at a school bus in souther Israel just moments after it had dropped off the rest of the school children. The teenager died from his injuries on April The bomb had been placed near a telephone booth at a crowded bus stop.
Parents Udi and Ruth, along with three of their young children, were stabbed to death by Palestinian terrorists inside their home in the village of Itamar in ther northern West Bank during a Sabbath night. Three other children were thankfully not home at the time. Luken, a US citizen living in England and touring in Israel, was stabbed to death by Palestinian terrorists while hiking in the hills west of Jerusalem with a friend.
In April the U. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia released a statement that Luken's killers, Ayad Fatafta and Kifah Ghanimat, were each to face federal charges of murdering a U. The four Israelis, including a married couple, were murdered in their vehicle in a Hamas terrorist drive-by shooting attack on Route 60 near Kiryat Arba, east of Hebron.

An Islamist group affiliated with Al-Qaeda calling itself the 'Jihad and Tawhid Brigades' claimed responsibility for the attack. Nasraladin, a police officer from the Druze town of of Daliat el-Carmel, was killed on a military base near Nahal Oz by a mortar attack from Gaza. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack. Driving a bulldozer on Jaffa Road between the Central Bus Station and the Mahane Yehuda market, the terrorist plowed into cars and pedestrians as well as two public buses carrying some 50 passengers. Police shot and killed the terrorist. Rosenberg was killed and four others were wounded when a mortar bomb fired by Palestinian terrorists fom the Gaza Strip exploded outside the Nirlat paint factory in Kibbutz Nir-Oz.

The terrorists detonated previously planted explosive devices and then opened fire with RPG's and machine guns. Killed when a Kassam rocket landed near his car in Sderot. Killed when a Kassam rocket fired by terrorists in Gaza scored a direct hit on her car near the shopping center in the center of town. He was killed by multiple stab wounds. Three people were killed in a suicide bombing at a residential bakery in the southern city of Eilat.
Five other passengers were wounded. March 1 - Eldar Abir, 48, of Migdalim was killed when two Palestinian shot him at point blank range at the gas station near Migdalim in the West Bank. April 17 - Eleven people were killed and over 60 wounded in a suicide bombing during the Passover holiday at the Rosh Ha'ir shawarma restaurant, near the old central bus station in Tel Aviv. The Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack. Lior Anidzar, 26, of Tel Aviv died of his wounds on May June 11 - Marwan Abed Shweika, 35, of the Abu Tor neighborhood in Jerusalem was killed and two other Arab Israelis were wounded in a shooting attack while driving late at night West Bank highway north of Jerusalem.
June 25 - Lt. Hanan Barak, 20, of Arad and Staff-Sgt. Pavel Slutzker, 20, of Dimona were killed when terrorists from the Hamas and Popular Resistance Committees terror organizations infiltrated Israeli territory between the Kerem Shalom and Sufa crossings, by means of a tunnel dug from the Rafah area.
Another soldier was abducted, and four others were wounded. His body was found on June 29 in Ramallah. It is believed that he was murdered shortly after his kidnapping. July 17 - St. Osher Damari, 20, of Netanya was killed and six IDF soldiers wounded by an explosive device in Nablus as troops from the Haruv Battalion were engaged in anti-terrorist activity.
The Fatah al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack. July 27 - The burnt body of Dr. Daniel Yaakobi, 59, a doctor from Yakir in the West Bank, was found in the trunk of his car near Qalqilya. August 10 - Angelo Frammartino, 24, of Monte Rotondo, Italy was stabbed to death by an Arab knifeman while walking with friends on Sultan Suleiman street in east Jerusalem.
It is believed that the attack was a nationalistically motivated terror attack, and not an attempted robbery. August 19 - St. Ro'i Farjoun, 21, of Yehud was killed when a terrorist opened fire at the Bekaot chekpoint in the Jordan Valley.
September 12 - An IDF reserve Bedouin tracker, 44, was killed by sniper fire in the course of an army operation to uncover terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, near the Kissufim Crossing. The armed wing of Hamas and the Popular Resistance Committees claimed responsibility for the shooting. November 1 - Staff Sergeant Kiril Golenshein, 21, of Moshav Keshet, was killed by a sniper's bullet as his unit entered the town of Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip in pursuit of terrorists firing Kassam rockets at Israel.
November 15 - Fatima Slutsker, 57, of Sderot, was killed by a Kassam rocket fired into the town by Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip. A barrage of six rockets hit Sderot at about 7 a. November 21 - Yaakov Yaakobov, 43, of Sderot, died following a day-long struggle by doctors to save his life, after he was mortally wounded by a Kassam rocket fired in the morning by Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip.
He died of his wounds on January Two others were wounded in the attack, for which Hamas claimed responsibility. January 7 - St. Yosef Yossi Atia, 21, of Petah Tikva, was killed and three fellow off-duty soldiers were wounded when Palestinian gunmen opened fire on their car on the Trans-Samaria Highway. The Fatah al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack.
January 12 - Gideon Rivlin, 50, of Ganei Tal was killed and three IDF soldiers were wounded when a bomb was detonated as a military vehicle patroled the route near Morag in the southern Gaza Strip. Two terrorists were killed by IDF forces.
The area was booby-trapped with explosive devices, in addition to the bomb that exploded. January 13 - On Thursday night, shortly before the closing of the Karni Crossing, terrorists activated an explosive device on the Palestinian side, blowing a hole in the door through which Palestinian terrorists infiltrated the Israeli side of the crossing and opened fire at Israeli civilians.
As a result of the explosion and exchanges of fire, six Israeli civilians and three Palestinian terrorists were killed, and five Israeli civilians were wounded. Hamas and the Fatah al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades claimed joint responsiblity for the attack.
January 15 - Ayala-Haya Ella Abukasis, 17, of Sderot was mortally wounded when a Qassam rocket landed near her and shrapnel penetrated her cerebellum, leaving her brain dead. She was struck while protecting her younger brother, who was lightly wounded. Kept on life support throughout the week, her parents agreed to stop treatment when doctors told them there was no chance of recovery. She died on January While search procedures were being implemented at a post at the junction, the suicide bomber with explosives strapped to his body detonated himself.
February 25 - Five people were killed and 50 wounded Friday night, when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the Stage club on the Tel Aviv promenade at around P. Odelia Hubara, 26, of Jerusalem, died of her wounds on February May 2 - St. Dan Talasnikov, 21, of Nir Galim was killed and another soldier lightly wounded in an exchange of fire during an operation to arrest wanted terrorists from the Islamic Jihad in the village of Saida, north of Tulkarem.
One of the terrorists, responsible for the February 25 suicide bombing in Tel Aviv, was killed. The second terrorist was apprehended. June 7 - Three workers were killed and five wounded when a Qassam rocket hit a packing shed in Ganei Tal, in the Gaza Strip, penetrating the building's roof and exploding indoors. The Chinese worker killed has been identified as Bi Shude, 46, from Jilin province in northeastern China. Avi Karouchi, 25, of Beersheba was killed and two soldiers were wounded in a coordinated Palestinian attack in which RPG missiles and gunfire were fired at an IDF engineering force conducting construction work on the Philadelphi route along the Israeli-Egyptian border.
June 20 - Yevgeny Reider, 28 of Hermesh was killed and a year old teenager was wounded in a terrorist shooting attack in the village of Baka A-Sharkiya in the northern West Bank. June 24 - Avihai Levy, 17, of Beit Hagai was killed in a drive-by terrorist shooting at a hitchhiking stop about meters from the entrance to Beit Hagai, south of Hebron. Aviad Mansour, 16, of Otniel, fatally wounded in the attack, died on June Three others were wounded.
Anya Lifshitz, 50, of Netanya, who was mortally wounded, succumbed to her wounds on July Moshe Maor Jan, 21, of Netanya died of his wounds on July Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Fatah all claimed responsibility for the attack.
July 23 - Dov, 58, and Rachel Kol, 53, of Jerusalem were killed late Saturday night near the Kissufim crossing in the southern Gaza Strip while returning home from visiting family in Gush Katif. Two other students were wounded. September 21 - Sasson Nuriel, 55, of Jerusalem was kidnapped and slain by Palestinian terrorists.
His body was found on Sept 26 in a garbage dump in the industrial zone of Bitunya, west of Ramallah. Another teenager was seriously shot and wounded near Eli, in Samaria. A sixth victim, Genia Poleis, 66, of Hadera, died of her wounds 11 days later, on Saturday, November 5. The Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the atrocity. November 2 - St. Yonatan Evron, 20, of Rishon Lezion, was mortally wounded in a gun battle with terrorists near the West Bank town of Jenin before dawn.
Evron's unit was providing security for an overnight raid on a terrorist hideout in the village of Marka when terrorists opened fire from ambush at about 3 a. He died while being evacuated to a hospital by helicopter.
November 9 - Hussam Fathi Mahajna, 36, an Israeli Arab businessman from Umm al-Fahm, was among 57 people murdered and wounded in simultaneous attacks by suicide bombers in Amman, Jordan at three luxury hotels. Mahajna was a guest at a wedding held at the Radisson Hotel, known to be popular with Israeli tourists. Al-Qaida claimed responsiblity for the attacks. December 5 - Five people were killed and over 50 wounded in a suicide bombing at the entrance to the Sharon shopping mall in Netanya.
The terrorist detonated the bomb when he was stopped by security guards, one of whom was killed. December 8 - Sgt. Nir Kahane, 20, of Kiryat Tivon, was stabbed to death at the Kalandiya checkpoint, south of Ramallah. The assailant was apprehended. December 16 - Yosef Yossi Shok, 35, of Beit Hagai was killed in a shooting attack while driving home in the southern Hebron hills.
Two passengers were wounded. December 29 - Lt. Ori Binamo, 21, of Nesher was killed when a terrorist en route to carry out an attack in Israel detonated himself at a roadblock set up near Tulkarm following an intelligence tip.
A second intended suicide terrorist was also killed in the blast as well as the taxi driver and a third passenger. Three soldiers and seven Palestinians were wounded. January 13 - Ro'i Arbel, 29, of Talmon, was killed in a terror shooting ambush near his home in Samaria. Three other passengers of the vehicle were wounded. January 14 - Cpl. Andrei Kegeles, 19, of Nahariya; St. Vladimir Trostinsky, 22, of Rehovot were killed and 10 wounded when a female suicide bomber detonated a bomb at the Erez Crossing in the Gaza Strip.
January 29 - Eleven people were killed and over 50 wounded, 13 of them seriously, in a suicide bombing of an Egged bus no. February 22 - Eight people were killed and over 60 wounded, 11 of them school pupils, in a suicide bombing on Jerusalem bus no.
February 26 - Sgt. Amir Zimmerman, 25, of Kfar Monash was killed and two other soldiers wounded when two Palestinian terrorists opened fire near the Erez Crossing between the Gaza Strip and Israel. The terrorists were killed by soldiers. March 14 - Ten people were killed and 16 wounded in a double suicide bombing at Ashdod Port.
Hamas and Fatah claimed responsibility for the attack. March 19 - George Khoury, 20, a Christian Arab and the son of well-known veteran attorney Elias Khoury of Beit Hanina, was shot to death from a vehicle while jogging in the north Jerusalem neighborhood of French Hill. The Fatah Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, which claimed responsibility for the attack, later published an apology.
April 3 - Yaakov Kobi Zagha, 40, of Avnei Hefetz was shot dead by a terrorist outside his home, after his daughter Hani, 14, was shot and wounded. April 17 - Border Policeman Cpl. Kfir Ohayon, 20, of Eilat was killed, three others wounded when a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up at the Erez Crossing. Hamas and Fatah claimed joint responsibility for the attack. April 25 - Border Policeman Cpl.
Yaniv Mashiah, 20, of Jaffa, was killed and three others lightly wounded just an hour after the beginning of Memorial Day for Israel's fallen soldiers when shots were fired at their vehicle near Hebron. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack. May 2 - Tali Hatuel, 34, and her daughters - Hila, 11, Hadar, 9, Roni, 7, and Merav, 2 - of Katif in the Gaza Strip were killed and another civilian and two soldiers wounded when two Palestinian terrorists fired on an Israeli car at the entrance to the Gaza Strip settlement bloc of Gush Katif.
Fatah and Islamic Jihad claimed joint responsibility for the attack. The soldiers killed: Sgt. Adaron Amar, 20, of Eilat; Sgt. Eitan Newman, 21, of Jerusalem. May 12 - An IDF officer and four soldiers were killed, and three IDF soldiers were lightly injured, while preparing to detonate a weapon-smuggling tunnel on the Philadelphi Route near the Israeli-Egyptian border near Rafah.
Their armored personnel carrier exploded, apparently after being his by an RPG anti-tank rocket. The soldiers killed: Cpl. Elad Cohen, 20, of Jerusalem; Sgt. Aiman Ghadir, 24, of Bir Makhsur; Lt. Aviv Hakani, 23, of Ashdod; Sgt.
Za'ur Zohar Smelev, 19, of Ofakim; and Sgt. Lior Vishinski, 20, of Ramat Gan. May 14 - St. Rotem Adam, 21, Rishon Lezion and Sgt. Alexei Hayat, 21, of Beersheba were killed and two soldiers moderately wounded by Palestinian sniper fire in the Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip. May 29 - Maj. Shachar Ben-Yishai, 25, of Menahemia was killed by Palestinian gunfire following a search in the Balata camp near Nablus. June 21 - A foreign worker, Weerachai Wongput, 37, from the Nong Han District of the northeastern province of Udon Thani in Thailand, died after being hit by shrapnel from a mortar fired into greenhouses in Kfar Darom in the Gaza Strip.
The mortar was fired by Palestinians trying to divert attention from an attempt to infiltrate the settlement. June 27 - St. Roi Nissim, 20, of Rishon Lezion, was killed and five other soldiers were wounded when their outpost in the Gaza Strip was blown up by Hamas terrorists who tunneled under the position and detonated a massive explosive charge.
June 28 - Mordechai Yosepov, 49, and Afik Zahavi, four, were killed when a Kassam rocket fired by Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip struck near a nursery school in the northern Negev town of Sderot. June 29 - Moshe Yohai, 63, of Ashdod, was found shot to death in Beit Rima, a Palestinian Authority-controlled village near Ramallah, where he had apparently gone on business.
The Aksa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility. July 4 - Victor Kreiderman, 49, of Mevo Dotan, was ambushed and shot to death by Aksa Martyrs Brigades terrorists as he and his wife were driving near the village of Yabad. His wife, Emma, was lightly wounded. July 11 - Sgt. Hamas also has a presence in the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. Funding and External Aid: Historically, Hamas has received funding, weapons, and training from Iran and raises funds in Gulf countries. The group receives donations from Palestinian expatriates as well as its own charity organizations.
