The bird actually also represented a cage. You just dont realize it yet at the beginning of the game.
So you are actually choosing between two cages, therefore meaningless aside from the aesthetic aspect. You also see this at the very beginning when Luetec says, "he doesn't row". He does not, will not and has not rowed. Same with the coin flip. Its always heads, every time its flipped leading to all the checks on the board. Would still have been nice and appeased a few people if some subtle difference had been put in, like a dress change when they reach the zeppelin or something, but it certainly wasn't needed.
